Builder Jim Sturges
Plan # 392
My Tuholer N75JS was built 1972-1975. First flight Oct 1975 piloted by me. 70 hours total time. I flew regularly for 10 years. Parked until 1992. Sold to Dave Gunderson of Mora, Mn He cleaned the aircraft Flew without events for 7 years.
I had seen Tony at the Show in about 1975 when I was well along with the construction. Those were the days when builder meetings under a wing were the best part of the show. There were about 6 builders under the wing of a green Tuholer when Tony walked up. I knew I had a problem when I stood up. I am 6'2" and I remember this fellow about 5'8" ready to shake hands. No wonder things seemed tight.
One more brief story. At the time of the early flights, I was a young Engineer for Caterpillar designing crawler tractors. The local newspaper did a 4 page spread in their weekend insert. The Chief Engineer saw it and walked to my work area to rib me about it. I was ready for him. I forget what he said, but I will never forget my planned response, "Chuck, if more of the people here had enough confidence in their work to fly it, we would not have so many problems" That hit home. Within two hours, I had a mounted heat sealed copy of the article on my desk. And he promoted me 3 time in the next 5 years. In 1980, I became the youngest Assistant Chief Engineer at all of Caterpillar and I had 124 engineers reporting to me. Tony affected a lot of peoples lives with his design. It is one that you can become emotional about. I did. I devoted a lot of hours. But I learned a lot and it changed me for what is now the next 30 years. Thanks to Tony and the Tuholer.
